About

The Beguinage offers teaching at various levels, and support and encouragement for any who want to explore this way of life, those who long for God or those who simply long for the great gifts of serenity and gentle happiness it brings. We offer introductions to contemplative prayer, and regular teachings and quiet days which people are welcome to join.

With Catherine’s guidance, we are a Gathered Community.

Those who become beguines whether living in a house of prayer or under there own domestic arrangements undertake to:

  • Prayer morning and evening
  • Morning 40 minutes sitting meditation
  • Evening 20 minutes sitting meditation
  • Prayer before meals
  • Fast once a week
  • Live mindfully
  • Practice loving Kindness
  • Practice Spiritual discipline
  • Wear a distinguishing red thread on their wrist.

We are brought together by the teaching and the practice of the contemplative life. We come from different walks of life but share a commitment to the spiritual truth, and to finding union with the divine. We live ordinary lives of different shapes. We live in community in a house of prayer, or in our own homes maybe with kids maybe with partners maybe singly. We live out of the inward path of quiet prayer and simplicity and loving kindness.

What does Beguinage mean?

What does Beguinage mean?

The beguines were  drawn to a contemplative path and devotion to God without dominance power structures.  The impetus for these people was a desire to live authentic and integrated lives which were immersed in God.

Unlike monasteries and convents, you could join and leave easily according to your  needs. There was no need to hand over all your autonomy or all your personal money. Most members continued their normal paid work. For some this meant they could live singly and safely and productively.

The people on the contemplative path will find  many treasures which may ultimately lead to the mystic sagacity.
